A question of maintenance: the manufacturing secret
The first reason behind this design is primarily technical. When making a lollipop, you have to make sure that the candy remains firmly attached to the stick. Hollow sticks, especially those of Chupa Chups, have a small hole at the top allowing the melted sugar to seep in before hardening. This creates a solid anchor, preventing the treat from coming off too easily. A simple but ingenious trick that guarantees a better hold of the candy on its support.
An unexpected security measure
Beyond their practicality, these sticks also have another important use: safety. Lollipops are particularly popular with children, but they pose a choking hazard if accidentally swallowed. A hollow stick allows a slight passage of air if a child accidentally swallows it, thus reducing the risk of asphyxiation. This same principle has also been applied to pen caps, which were once responsible for many similar accidents.
