Fig jam is one of the most popular types of jam thanks to its sweet and wholesome taste. However, many people are looking for sugar-free alternatives to eat healthier.
Here is a simple and delicious recipe to make fig jam with no added sugar, perfect for those who want to enjoy the natural taste of fruit without sacrificing their health.
Ingredients
1 kg fresh, ripe figs
1 large apple (for natural pectin)
The juice of one lemon
1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
100 ml apple juice (no added sugar)
Method
Preparation of the figs: Wash the figs thoroughly under cold running water. Remove the stalk and quarter the figs. There is no need to peel them as the peel contains valuable fiber and softens when cooked.
Preparation of the apple: Peel the apple, remove the core and cut the apple into small cubes. The apple provides natural sweetness and pectin, a natural thickener that gives the jam the right thickness.
Preparation: Place the figs, diced apple, lemon juice and apple juice in a large saucepan. Lemon juice not only enhances the flavor of the fruit, but also acts as a natural preservative. If you like, you can add cinnamon for a spicy note.
Simmer: Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Once it boils, reduce the heat and simmer for about 40 to 50 minutes. Stir regularly to prevent the fruit from sticking to the bottom of the pan and burning.
Blend: Once the figs and apples are completely soft, you can blend the mixture with a hand blender until smooth, or mash it with a fork for a creamier, richer consistency.
Check the consistency: If the jam is too runny, you can continue to cook it until it reaches the desired consistency. Note that the jam will thicken further as it cools.
Preserving: Pour the hot jam into sterilized jars until they reach about 1 cm below the rim. Close the jars with the sterilized lids and turn them over to create a vacuum. Allow the jars to cool completely before storing.
