Gradually add the flour to the mixture, mixing until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
Punch down the dough and divide it into small portions (about 1-2 ounces each). Roll each portion into a long rope (about 10 inches long) and twist the rope several times. Bring the ends together to form a twisted doughnut shape and press to seal.
Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry the twisted doughnuts in batches until they are golden brown, turning them occasionally to ensure even cooking. This should take about 2-3 minutes per side.
Remove the doughnuts from the oil and drain them on paper towels.
While the doughnuts are still warm, you can coat them in a mixture of sugar and cinnamon if desired.
