Preheat the oven to 163°C (325°F). Grease and flour a loaf pan.
In a medium bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, and salt.
In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with milk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until combined.
Fold in the mixed dried fruits and nuts until evenly distributed.
Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the surface. Decorate with the candied cherries on top.
Bake for 70-80 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
