How to Make Your Peace Lily Bloom All Year Long Using Rice Water
If you’ve recently bought a Peace Lily and don’t know how to care for it, you’re not alone. Many people buy this beautiful plant from a nursery, unsure of how to cultivate it, which fertilizer to use, or how to encourage it to bloom consistently. In this article, I’m going to share a simple and effective technique to help your Peace Lily thrive, remain healthy, and bloom year-round.
The Secret to a Blooming Peace Lily: Rice Water
Rice water is an excellent natural fertilizer for Peace Lilies and many other plants. It is rich in essential nutrients, including vitamins, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and boron. These nutrients help promote healthy plant growth, increase the green color of the leaves, and encourage flowering.
The best part is that rice water is easy to make and very affordable. You don’t need to spend money on expensive fertilizers—just use something you probably already have in your kitchen!
What You Will Need:
1 small cup (about 180 ml) of uncooked rice (any type of rice works)
2 liters of water (preferably chlorine-free)
A blender
A fine mesh strainer
A container for storing the rice water solution
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Prepare the Rice Water Mixture
Take a small cup (about 180 ml) of uncooked rice and place it in a blender. Add 2 liters of water (preferably chlorine-free water) into the blender as well. Blend the mixture for about 2 to 3 minutes until the rice water becomes smooth and milky.
Strain the Rice Water
Once the rice water is blended, use a fine mesh strainer to filter out any rice residue. This step is important because you want to avoid any rice particles from coming in contact with the soil, which could lead to mold or attract pests. Only the liquid should be used to water the plant.
Apply the Rice Water to Your Peace Lily
Now that you have your rice water ready, it’s time to apply it to your Peace Lily. Pour the rice water directly into the soil around the base of the plant. Make sure to water the plant thoroughly, but avoid over-watering. The goal is to ensure the soil is evenly moist without making it soggy.
