Lovebugs are drawn to decomposing organic materials such as compost heaps, leaf piles, and mulch, which they feed on. Keep your yard tidy and free of any waste that might serve as a food source for them. Maintain appropriate waste management practices and do the routine cleanup of falling leaves.
Even though most insect repellents are not very effective against lovebugs, you may get some relief from their bites by using a repellent that contains DEET or picaridin on any skin that will be exposed to the elements. If there are certain locations or plants on your property that you wish to keep lovebugs away from, you may want to think about constructing physical barriers such as netting or screens.
If the lovebug swarm continues and becomes too much to handle, it is probably better to seek the advice of a trained pest control specialist. This person will be able to evaluate the situation and provide proper treatment alternatives. Also, keep in mind that lovebugs do not pose a threat to people or plants in general, although their swarms may be rather annoying. They live for a brief period due to their short lifetime, and after mating season is through, their activity level drops significantly.
