How to Remove a Broken Key from a Lock: 5 Tips to Avoid Having to Take Everything Apart


Procedure: After lubricating the area around the key, use pliers or scissors to carefully grasp the protruding part of the key. Gently try to remove the key, being careful not to push it deeper into the lock.

If the door is not locked:

1. Scissors solution

Procedure: If the key is stuck with the door open, find a pair of fine-tipped scissors. On the opposite side (such as inside the house), slide the tip of a scissor until it contacts the broken key. Gently push to push the key out. If it doesn’t come up at all, use pliers to remove it.

2. The key to rescue

Procedure: This technique is parallel to the previous one, although it uses a different tone. Inserting this key into the lock from the opposite side will push the broken key out.
