Where and when to plant for a bountiful harvest?
Blueberries like a sunny exposure without excess or partial shade , but above all a very specific soil: very acidic, without limestone and well drained. Don’t panic if your soil isn’t suitable! A large pot or a planter will be perfect.
Here is the very simple method:
- Place clay balls or gravel at the bottom of the pot for drainage.
- Then fill with a mixture of heather soil and a little potting soil or compost.
- Plant your shrub preferably in the fall for best recovery. If you plant it in the spring, water it generously and regularly.
Smart maintenance for unlimited blueberries:
Like all plants, the blueberry bush has its own set of requirements. But don’t worry, it’s nothing complicated !
- From March, give it a specific fertilizer for heather plants (rhododendron type).
- In autumn, mulch the base with bark or pine needles: this helps maintain acidic soil.
- In dry periods, water with non-calcareous water, preferably rainwater.
- In winter, just remove dead branches.
And if you become addicted, know that the blueberry bush multiplies easily: cuttings, division, layering… it’s up to you to plant in series!
The little extra: an economical and sustainable culture:
Planting a blueberry bush is a nice gesture for your health… but also for your budget! Once well established, this shrub will provide you with fruit for several years without additional expense . And frankly, enjoying a handful of freshly picked blueberries on your balcony? It’s a little daily pleasure that we never tire of.
Growing your own blueberries is a bit like adopting a mini orchard at home: simple, decorative, and particularly rewarding.
