Edward didn’t want to give her just any gift, but something of great value that he could keep and pass on to his own children. After thinking about it for a while, he remembered that Cynthia had loved his late wife’s necklace when she was a child, which was inherited by his eldest daughter.
Unfortunately, this necklace was an heirloom that he was sure Cynthia’s aunt would not give in his name. Instead, he decided to buy her a piece of jewelry that could also become a family heirloom in the future.
Edward decided to visit a jewelry store to see what he could buy when he had the money. He believed that it would be easier for him to work if he had a specific goal that motivated him.
He calculated that he would earn $15 an hour, working seven hours a day, four times a week. That would give him $10,080 by the time his granddaughter gets married in six months.
She noticed a beautiful diamond set in the jewelry that included a necklace, bracelet, and earrings. It caught his eye because it was similar to the one his wife used to wear. The match cost $5,000, and he was happy to be able to pay for it with his salary.
When he worked in the park, he would often stop by the jewelry store to see his target. I was so excited because I knew Cynthia would love it.
After four months, Edward had enough money to pay for the jewelry set. However, he wanted to finish his six-month contract so that he would have more money to spend on his medication and other bills. She decided not to buy the jewelry set until the last minute so that she could really taste the fruits of her labor.
Just two weeks before the wedding, Edward was sweeping the grounds of the park when his eldest daughter, Meryl, walked by and spotted him. At first, he thought he had imagined it, but he got closer and could see that it was really his father sweeping the grounds.
She felt ashamed and couldn’t believe she had decided to work as a janitor. He thought it was a dishonor to his family. He told Cynthia’s mother, Sharon, what he had seen, and they both shared their opinions.
