1 pound pizza dough
1 cup marinara sauce
1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup sliced pepperoni
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 egg (for egg wash)
Directions
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Roll out the pizza dough on a floured surface into a large circle, about 12 inches in diameter.
Spread the marinara sauce over half of the dough, leaving a 1-inch border around the edge.
Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese over the sauce, then layer the pepperoni slices on top.
Fold the other half of the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Pinch the edges together to seal the calzone.
In a small bowl, beat the egg with a splash of water to make an egg wash. Brush the top of the calzone with the egg wash.
Sprinkle the Parmesan cheese and Italian seasoning over the top of the calzone.
Carefully transfer the calzone to the prepared baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
Let the calzone cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
Variations & Tips
For a veggie version, swap the pepperoni for sautéed mushrooms, bell peppers, and onions. You can also add some spinach for a pop of color and nutrients. If you’re a fan of spice, try adding some red pepper flakes or sliced jalapeños to the filling. For a more gourmet twist, consider using a mix of cheeses like provolone or gouda along with the mozzarella. And if you’re short on time, you can use store-bought pizza dough or even crescent roll dough for a quicker prep.
