20 foods that can be consumed after the expiry date

If you have products and food at home, in your refrigerator or in your pantry and are hesitant to eat or throw them in the trash, here is a list of foods that you can use safely even if the expiry date has passed.

First of all, a clear distinction must be made between the deadline for consumption and the date of minimum durability. You will find these dates on the food labels.

Before eating a food, our reflex is to check the expiry date, also called the consumption deadline. If the date is exceeded, we tend to throw some foods into the trash can without thinking.

But these expiry dates are also the reason why there is a lot of food waste, which is why it is necessary to understand them first, because it is possible to eat many foods even after the expiry date.

What do you need to know about the expiry dates of food?
First of all, a clear distinction must be made between the deadline for consumption and the date of minimum durability. You will find these dates on the food labels. The date of minimum durability (MDD) is usually preceded by the words “to be consumed preferably before …” and concerns less perishable foods such as eggs or beer, for example. The consumption deadline (DLC) is preceded by the words “to be consumed until …” and concerns perishable products. These are products that are usually in the fridge such as yogurt or fresh milk and that can put your health at risk if they are out of date and consume them.

Once you have integrated this difference between dates, please be aware that you can consume products that have a consumption deadline after that date without risk, as confirmed by the AFSCA.

There are many other foods that you will find in supermarkets that are not obliged to set an expiry date, including alcohol, but also vegetables and fresh fruit.
